Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County
    OUR MISSION
    “Rescue, Rehabilitate, Adopt, Educate”
‍‍The roots of our organization can be traced to Shirley Silver and Dr. Rufus Sparks, a
veterinarian, in 1969 to alleviate conditions at the Trumbull County Dog Pound. The current
Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Inc., became incorporated on March 19, 1971, and
was certified by the IRS on May 11, 1972 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charitable organization. Twin
sisters Barbara and Mary Busko joined in 1977 and worked with various foster homes to care
for animals. Other early founders/board members included Ali Patterson, Wayne and Molly
Rush, Rochelle Naylor, Attorney Ned Gold, and Bob Van Fossan.

An emergency rescue team was established in January 1980. We opened our first shelter in
1984 at 545 Brunstetter Road SW in Warren. We opened the Menagerie Thrift and Gift Shoppe
in December 1995 to raise funds for the shelter operation. In December 1999 we established
the Caring Companions dog training program at the Trumbull Correctional Institution to help
    certain dogs become more adoptable.

We became an Ohio humane society on August 27, 2007. In 2013 we began a working
relationship with the Vet Tech Program at Kent State University, which began to hold classes
here with our shelter animals. We moved to our present location near the end of April 2014.
