Description
Bridgeport Hardware Manufacturing was founded in 1895 in Bridgeport, CT. A fire and subsequent reorganization in 1902 brought about the name change to Bridgeport Hardware Manufacturing Corporation. For the next half century the company produced a broad line of tools. Much of of what they made was contract production for other companies. In early 1960s the company was acquired by Crescent Niagara which also held Crescent Tools, Billings & Spencer and Barcalo’s tool division. The Bridgeport name appeared on tools as late as 1967.The 248 Sure Grip appeared in
Bridgeport
’s 1953 catalog (No. 53) in three sizes; 2 inches, 4 inches and 7 inches. The Blades were an alloy steel and the handles “genuine Amberlite.” (

)
This is a sturdy tool. Descriptions of the Amberlite Handle suggest that hammering was expected and acceptable! If this Handle was hammered it held up well. There is obvious evidence on the Handle of long-term usage; nicks and scratches (see images). There is no evidence that the Screwdriver has been compromised in any way. The Spring on the Screw Holder functions properly and easily. The Blade is moderately nicked (see images). The 3/8 Inch, square cross-section, shaft practically begs to be used to apply greater twisting force.
The 248 SURE GRIP Screw Holding Screw Driver could be made to be “prettier”, but it might be happier in a working tool box.
We will ship the SURE GRIP by USPS 1st Class Mail on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
