Description
CELIUS, KNIGHT 15, ROOT
High Grade CHESS Model
ROOT = Plateau Top Bowl
Lightly Smoked, Excellent
Pretty Grain, Very Near Mint
Offering a beautiful Danish Freehand by Svend Axel Celius of Denmark. It’s from the Chess Line, thought the grading on this line tends to be a bit erratic in regards to what name it received this one is a high-grade, a KNIGHT model. The bowl is tall and slim, and the pipe is light in weight at 1.75 ounces. Great looking cut, classic freehand, a nicely cut stem too, overall, quite gorgeous looking pipe. It’s additionally marked ROOT, which is their indication of the natural Plateau upper rim. It’s in very near mint shape, with no noted wear to the bowl. The stampings are also clear and easy to read. The bowl interior looks great, very lightly smoked. Stem is original and has just a hint of tooth chatter, in amazing shape. The pipe is a nice collector’s piece as these are not often seen, and this one is in exceptional condition. It’s been freshly polished and is ready to smoke!

Additional cleaning may be desired on some pipes, as I focus on the exterior reconditioning and reaming, and leave the shank interior to the new owner. Pipe stand not included with any pipe.

Svend Axel Celius learned his craft from Poul Rasmussen and Sven Knudsen, Rasmussen’s foreman, starting around 1959/60. He saw the interest in Danish freehand pipes in the US market and started a shop in 1963. His success was up and down over many years, employing up to 20 co-workers, and he closed his shop in the mid 1970’s. After that still worked solo into the late 1980’s but never matched Rasmussen’s other students like Former Nielsen, Sven Knudsen or Tom Etlang. He is known for three main lines of pipe. The first is Fantasy, with wild and fancy designs. Next is Zenia, pipes in classic forms, and named after his daughter. Last is best known, his Chess line. These bear names borrowed from chess pieces. The Pawn is sandblasted, Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen and King. If the plateau was on top they were also marked Root. Numbers relate loosely to shape and not grade, and other markings are seen but not with definite meanings.
