    Description

This is not only one of the earliest pipes I have had from Preben Holm, but it's also one of the finest; look at that straight grain, wow!!! This pipe would undoubtedly be a Private Collection had it been made later in his legendary career. Hard to find early pipes stamped "P.Holm" like this one and it surprisingly remains mint after about 50 years give or take. It shows Preben's profound mastery at creating fancy freehands with floral characteristics which would eventually become his Tulip shape. The large bowl is oval in design and fits like a glove in hand with a wide craggy plateau rim that opens up to a generous chamber. To the front of the bowl are two fluted sections adding a lovely touch and as the bowl tapers it comes to what I thought would be a flat spot for making the pipe a setter but it is more for looks rather than function. Just above the transition shows "steps" leading to a stout oval shank that is extended by a stunning real horn section that flares out and is deeply concave at the face and holds the original fancy vulcanite stem that is crisp. Finish is a gorgeous golden contrast that was employed perfectly to highlight truly exceptional 360 degree ultra fine uniform angel hair straight grain that is out of this world! A spectacular and special early pipe from the late great Holm, this one is for the utmost discerning collector.
