Description
I've had the pleasure of offering a few high grades from Master Fukuda-San of Tsuge pipes over the years but this has to be one of the absolute finest! Made in 2006 after the lettered grading system was discontinued, it would easily qualify to be in the "G" realm or higher as the grain is marvelous. Fukuda studied with Sixten Ivarsson in the 1970's and was later referred to as one of the greatest carvers of all time by Lars Ivarsson. It shows here in this spectacular piece and while it displays tremendous Danish character it still somehow exudes Japanese artistry. A half bent Plateau Freehand, the bowl is oval and cradles perfectly in hand offering super thick walls and a craggy yet refined plateau rim opening to a deep chamber affording healthy capacity but not overly large. As the bowl tapers we find a touch of Acorn shape to the profile with a graceful transition to a sturdy round shank that swoops up to meet the original hand-cut faceted ebonite saddle fishtail stem. Finish is stunning and beautifully highlights the briar's exceptional grain with 360 degree fine angel hair straight and remarkable depth with layers upon layers! This pipe is near mint and an opportunity to acquire a phenomenal pipe from Fukuda-San of Tsuge! Comes with original leather glove with gold lettering logo to protect your new favorite pipe.Nomenclature: TSUGE MADE IN JAPAN 171 06, IKEBANA
